Top 5 Things To Consider Before Working From Home
By: Tammy Embrich
Working from home is a unique luxury, however it may not be for everyone. The work at home jobs industry is wide open and the choices are endless. What type of telecommute job are you searching for? Just to clarify, telecommuting is a work arrangement between employee and employer, and is usually performed from a home office setting. There are many options available. The options could be; customer service, virtual assistant, writing, paid to blog, and many more.
Individuals that enjoy a home office atmosphere do have certain skill sets. These could vary from typing, Internet research, customer service skills, to writing or blogging skills. There are many things to take into consideration before making that work from home plunge. They are conveniently listed below.
No Work Benefits - Even though working at home does have its many benefits, however there will not be "work benefits," meaning; insurance, paid vacation, retirement plans, etc. You will then need to pay for and arrange on obtaining insurance, strategically arrange for taking time off from your business and set up a savings account for retirement.
Child Care - If you have small non-school-age children at home with you, this is definitely something to consider. Your children of course, need to be catered to. If you have more than one child at home, you may consider a live-in nanny. If you have older children still at home, perhaps an agreement could be configured for them to look after the younger children while you do your telecommuting tasks. After all, they live in the household too.
Another idea would be to arrange play dates among your neighbors that also need time to conduct work from home tasks. This ideal arrangement would be a win-win situation for all involved. You would have free time to get work done and you will also have other kids for your children to get to know and play with.
Work Hours and Shifts - This could be challenging to get used to. Work shifts may vary. You could be getting yourself into night shifts, early morning or banking hours. Often times, hours do not matter to the job seeker, as they need a job now....meaning yesterday and are willing to work any hours or frequency. Just to keep you informed, this may be something you have not thought about.
Discipline With Time and Priorities - If you are going to successfully work at home, time is essential. Set some reasonable business goals, make yourself a daily work schedule, and prioritize your time so you will be able to work more efficient. Discipline WILL be a daily work in progress. If you don't discipline yourself, your business may fall by the wayside. Keep a stiff upper lip and stick to your goals and home business priorities.
Family Support - This is the last on my list here, however is definitely NOT the least! Support from your family is so, so very important. When I first started out in the work at home industry, my family support was lacking and as a result, I almost gave up. Being the stubborn soul that I am got me where I am today. I set goals, and also my priorities. Also a lot of trial and error must always be a process with how you perform your work duties, go through all your learning curves, and continue on with a positive attitude. Now I happily have the full support of my family. :)
Telecommuting is a wonderful thing. However if you don't carefully consider all 5 things that I've mentioned above, it may just be a recipe for disaster. Be careful and cover all your basis. And much success to you! ;)
