Work At Home - My Top 5 Challenges Faced
By: Tammy Embrich
Working at home has been wonderful, indeed a life-changing, work at home luxury for me. I've been able to be there for my aging parents. Although it's been just my dad for the last 5 years, and he has needed me quite often even though he resides in an assisted living facility.
I'm so very thankful I have the opportunity to stay at home and earn an income, especially with the economy the way it's declined the last few years. In fact there are a number of advantages of working at home, as many of us share the same.
However, there are a few challenges that I've experienced, faced, and dealt with. Challenges? You didn't expect a golden-paved road to forever riches did you? It's been far from that, although I've been able to pay my car payment, my insurance, and also supplement my husband's salary. We've also been able to take some well-needed vacations. Alas, the challenges unfortunately do exist.
Below Are My Top 5 Work At Home Challenges
* Leaving my work in the office after working hours
I'm sure a lot of you face this same thing each and every day. It's been rather difficult. I'll be preparing the evening meal or watching my favorite television program and an idea or something I need to do pops in my mind and in the office I go to make notes. And before I know it, I've spent the better part of 30 minutes checking some emails and other things.
Most often, the same takes place right before bedtime. I walk in the office to collapse some windows or shut the computer down only to see that I have new emails or website stats, and then I'm 45 minutes late for the time I promised myself that I'd be in bed. This vicious cycle repeats itself a great deal more than I'd like it to.
* My family not taking my work seriously
Family members call me often and expect me to drop everything at a drop of a hat and go do this or come and do that. It has not been easy and I have to say that this has been my biggest challenge.
Let's take a look at some things here: As work from home professionals, we deal with computer problems, connection errors, and distractions. One of the biggest obstacles I have found challenging are those
minor unexpected family emergencies that
only I have time for... (at least my family members
think I have time for).
Don't get me wrong, there are real emergencies that do arise, and I understand that, however the minor things is what I have issues with. Over time, I've learned to take it with a grain of salt, or at least as best I can now. I'd be foolish if I still let it upset me.
* Work at home isolation
Yes, I go through times when I feel so isolated and alone that tears come to the surface. The perfect solution is meeting with family or friends for lunch or going to get my nails done every 2 or 3 weeks. It doesn't sound that exciting does it? However, it works for me. I'm sure some of you feel the same way at times. It also refers to the
"work at home blues."
* No job benefits
When you work at home there are no health or retirement benefits. Ouch! That could be a huge challenge for someone that is disabled or is terminally ill. Health expenses can eat up your profits in a blink of an eye right there. So for people that are very ill, and have doctor visits often, working from home may not be an option. This is an issue that people have to consider when thinking of home employment.
* Staying focused
Remaining organized and focused can be a battle as well. There are so many household chores surrounding you daily as you do your online work. For some people, this is not a problem. However, for many others it is challenging to stay focused to get things done. There are days when it's challenging for me, although a daily list of home based tasks as well as household tasks helps me a great deal.
These are just 5 challenges. There are more...I just haven't listed them here. Just some things to ponder when deciding to take the virtual leap to work at home.
